A question we often get is “What music did you play on your cross-country journey?” The answer is: a LOT. But we managed to narrow the list down to the quintessential 16. Below are the songs we had constantly on repeat–the tunes that really defined our adventure or fit perfectly with a particular moment on our road trip. Enjoy!
1. Temptation
New Order
The tune blasting when we first left Chicago back in October 2007.
2. The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!
The inspiration for the trailer!
3. Heartbeats
The Knife
For when you’re rockin’ out in an anarchist loft in NOLA. Never got old! Ever.
4. Dreams
The Cranberries
For when you’re–let’s be real–speeding.
5. You Look Good When You Wear It Well
Felix Da Housecat
For a spontaneous dance party in the middle of Santa Fe. Simply amazing.
6. Slump
Outkast
Instant good mood.
7. Are You Out There
Dar Williams
For some good old-fashioned Lilith Fair fare.
8. She
Green Day
For when you’re driving off a cliff in Bel Air.
9. Pimpin’ All Over the World
Ludacris
Because you can’t be feminist with all your music choices!
10. Road Trippin’
Red Hot Chili Peppers
To be played in smoggy Hollywood, at dusk.
11. Behind the Wheel
Depeche Mode
For night-driving only.
12. Poncho and Lefty
Townes Van Zandt
For when you’re nestled in the Teton mountains in Wyoming.
13. Dakota
Stereophonics
For–you guessed it–the Dakotas.
14. Miss World
Hole
For when you’re feeling particularly Thelma-and-Louise, fuck-the-world-ish.
15. Dr. Dre
Let Me Ride
Need we say more?
16.23
Blonde Redhead
It’s a trance. It’s an energy drink and a lullaby at the same time. In short, perfect.

[...] Update: Susan of AWR just informed me of her pick for “definitive amazing women road-trip tune, “Legend of a Cowgirl” by Imani Coppola. Maybe I need to add it to Girldrive’s Feminist Road Trip Mix! [...]
