Maryland Heights, MS: the rise of women farmers

Girldrive interviewee and smarty-pants founder of OrganicNation.tv Dorothee Royal-Hedinger highlights the role of women in agriculture this week. She interviews Leigh Adcock, the executive director of the Women, Food & Agriculture Network, at Farm Aid 2009 in Maryland Heights, MS. They chat about how women own roughly half of the farmland in the U.S. (or at least in Iowa), but are under-represented when it comes to farming decision-making and influence. The video also raises some interesting questions about the role of moms in the organic food movement. Check out the interview here:

    Thanks so much for this post Nona! It was fascinating to learn more about women’s roles in the sustainable food movement from Leigh. I didn’t realize that so many women were landowners and were the major decision-makers about how their land is farmed!
