This is AMAZING. Ray McKenzie, of the Jen Justice Band aka my luvah Aaron’s dad’s band, wrote a song about Girldrive! The band performed it at the Chicago reading’s afterparty last Friday. This recording is only the acoustic version (Ray says he’ll send me a version with the full band soon), but I couldn’t help but post it immediately!!
Listen to the song here:
Lyrics after the jump.
Lyrics to “Girldrive”
Verse 1
Two girls on a mission
Keys in the ignition
on the road to listen
old friends with a vision
The tank is reading full
60 days to go
Stories to be told
Ready… set… go!
Chorus
Drive, Girldrive, Girldrive
Drive, Girldrive, Girldrive
Verse 2
So far from their home
Talk into the microphone
They never met before
But they opened up their doors
The highway is their guide
To find the way inside
The voices of the youth
Speak the bravest truth
Drive, Girldrive, Girldrive
Drive, Girldrive, Girldrive
Nona and Emma Bee
Came and talked to me
Krista in Tennesee
And Sharon in Fort Greene
“On the road” with a twist
Are you a feminist?
Thank you for your words
We listened and we heard
Drive, Girldrive, Girldrive

[...] I’ve blogged before about Ray McKenzie of the Jen Justice Band writing a song about Girldrive…but the only thing I had to offer was the acoustic version. This is a new and improved, live, plugged-in, girl-singer version that I needed to post immediately. It’s kinda hard to hear the lyrics over the din, so I’ve posted them after the jump! [...]
