[...] A new blog is saying, “Excuse you.” Meant to make visible the young voices fighting for access to abortion care in the United States, the boldly named “Abortion Gang” is made up of some young, fierce feminists such as Shelby Knox, Stephanie of I Am Dr. Tiller, and Maya Dusenbery, Girldrive’s guest blogger from last week.
Mary Ann Sorrentino's article is frustrating and oddly ill-informed for a woman who has been part of the women's rights movement for so long. Is she actually saying that women who have abortions should not speak openly about them? That this should be a big secret? Is this what we've been fighting for, secrecy and shame? I am proud of Maya Dusenbery for writing an intelligent and well-thought out response to Sorrentino's post. Having an abortion shouldn't have to be a shameful secret, and sadly it usually still is today. Twitter may seem like a tacky place to discuss abortion, but it isn't about the venue. It's about a woman's right to make decisions about her body and not be ashamed of those decisions. I bet her Twitter post brought solace to a lot of women out there who have hidden their abortions. I bet her Twitter post will open up an honest dialogue about the matter. We could use more honest dialogue.
