Gloria Steinem: “Gratitude never radicalized anybody”

May 13th, 2010 · 4 Comments

I’m about a week late on this, but I had to post it! Amid all the bullshit young women get for being sooo ungrateful for feminists and women activists who came before them, here is a refreshing view: Gloria Steinem hopes we take our rights for granted. She tells Joy Behar, who expresses concern about young women and our reverence (after Hilary Swank sings her foremothers’ praises), that gratitude never radicalized everybody. Check it out:

I love this clip and am so happy that Steinem feels this way too…sometimes Joy Behar really burns my biscuits.

While I totally agree with Steinem – equal rights are something to be expected, not begged for – I think the article you linked is making a valid point. We haven’t won full equality yet when it comes to making our own reproductive choices. Abortion is still widely contested, contraception is not as widely available as it should be, sexual double standards prevail, and abstinence only sex education is common. Clearly we have a long way to go toward achieving total equality and guaranteeing every woman the freedom to choose her own path in life. If young women take things like freedom of choice for granted, and become lazy about defending them, there is nothing to stop them from being restricted and then, eventually, taken away altogether.
