Real quick: Politics and love

May 24th, 2010 · 1 Comment

Shameless self-promotion: check out this little essay I wrote for The Frisky about–briefly!– dating a conservative dude, and whether I could ever ignore politics for love (or even friendship). I consider myself one of the most liberal people I know, and politics rile me up like nothing else–but ever since Girldrive, and especially lately, I have a real itch to get outside the safe lefty bubble, to try to understand other people’s positions before I stand on my soapbox and preach.

So far, this hasn’t made me compromise my ideals so much as allowed my foggy, lazy leftist ideas to crystallize. Sometimes you gotta debate/discuss/engage with the other side to really know what you stand for and figure out what’s important to you.

That is really interesting. I had a relationship with an ideological opposite, and it did sort of turn me on. The point where I draw the line, though, is cruelty. If I see someone’s political beliefs as not just vaguely, arguably supporting cruelty — but rather, actually BEING cruel — that’s it.

Example: said guy said transgendered people are just lying to themselves and shouldn’t have what he called “special rights”. Very cruel, very ignorant, and very different from, say, supporting prayer in schools.
