Real quick: Girldrive discussed on Firedoglake

Last Sunday, I participated in a book salon at Firedoglake, which back in March invited me to host a discussion about Anne Kornblut’s book, Notes from the Cracked Ceiling. The shoe was on the other foot Sunday, though: Girldrive was in the spotlight. It was a great discussion, particularly because the host, 18-year-old blogger wunderkind Cassie Frequelz, asked such great questions. The readers of Firedoglake skew older, too, so it was a good intergenerational discussion.

Things have been quiet around these parts for the last 10 days, and they’re gonna be for another week or so. I’m not exactly on vacation so much as in a major life transition. So I’m gonna take a little while to concentrate on my now-permanent home…never fear, though, I’ll be guest-blogging for Feministe in late July and will definitely cross-post.

I’ve blogged before about Ray McKenzie of the Jen Justice Band writing a song about Girldrive…but the only thing I had to offer was the acoustic version. This is a new and improved, live, plugged-in, girl-singer version that I needed to post immediately. It’s kinda hard to hear the lyrics over the din, so I’ve posted them after the jump!

The ladies from Seal Press and I took to the Berkeley streets last week, asking people to say the first word that came to their mind when they heard: “choice” “movement” “man” “woman” and, finally, “feminist.” The idea was to distill the concept of “Girldrive” down to one word, and also get some guys’ opinions while we were at it. We got some, um…interesting answers, especially with the last word. (One dude said “fucking ridiculous!” Another said “opposite of woman.” Ouch.)

Any good blogger might have done this yesterday, but better late than never. I’ll be doing two readings in the Bay Area today and tomorrow–stop by if you’re around!

Berkeley reading:

What: I will be signing copies and reading from Girldrive, including profiles of some Bay Area ladies.

San Fran reading:

Where: Modern Times Bookstore, 888 Valencia Ave., San Francisco
What: I, along with Girldrive interviewees Rebecca Rosenfelt and Bea Sullivan, will be reading from Girldrive. Famed ecofeminist Starhawk might make a guest appearance, too!
